International Opioid Awareness Day -August 31, 2020

With International Opioid Awareness Day on August 31, 2020, it is important that our community and even our youth are able to have open discussions regarding the dangers of misusing prescription medication. In Virginia, opioid overdoses have claimed the lives of 1,193 people in 2018. In fact, according to the Overdose Detection Mapping Program, those numbers are climbing significantly going into year 2021 with the number of suspected overdoses in the U.S. experiencing an 18% increase in the past year, as of March 2020.
With increased awareness, education, and response training we can protect our community and save lives right everyday, right here in Prince William County. To learn more about how you can get free medication disposal packs, medication lock boxes, become an opioid overdose emergency responder, or gain access to other resources visit Prince William County Community Services or contact our Behavioral Health and Wellness team at gdelbo@pwcgov.org.
Residents of Virginia that have concerns about your opioid use, someone you love or just have some questions about opioids can call the Virginia Opioid Helpline at 1-877-674-6437. Our staff can offer individualized resources and referrals to treatment in your area. Consultations are completely confidential and provided at no cost.
