Substance Misuse & Overdose Prevention

Opioid Overdose & Naloxone Education

Overdoses can happen in unexpected situations and to anyone: a friend, a family member, a coworker, at home, outside, or in a public place. You may not know that someone is at risk of overdose- stigma prevents many who use drugs from telling others and physical distancing can create social isolation.  Do you know how to help someone who has overdosed on opioids? Prince William Community Services is offering a free online class that will provide the knowledge and confidence you need to potentially save a life during an opioid overdose emergency. During this 60-minute virtual class, presented by a qualified instructor from the Behavioral Health Wellness team, you will learn:

  • How to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose.
  • How to administer Narcan nasal spray to potentially reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
  • Other knowledge needed to fully respond to an opioid overdose emergency (what to do and not do).

Fentanyl is being laced into street drugs across the greater Prince William County area. Fentanyl is undetectable and untraceable, which means it’s causing a spike in teen overdoses.

Stay safe by knowing the risks and what to do in case of an overdose.

Opioids are drugs a doctor might prescribe for pain relief. For example, your doctor might give you a medication with codeine, hydrocodone, morphine, or oxycodone to relieve pain from an injury or after a surgery. Some brand names for these medications include OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin. But there are many more. What many people don’t know is that opioids can be highly addictive. This means you could lose control over your use of them and feel sick without them. In addition to risking an accidental overdose, people may use opioids to attempt suicide.
